Building a recipe / Bill of Materials

Define the finished good, its ingredients and quantities, and standard wastage so production consumes stock automatically.

What a recipe / BOM does

A recipe (Bill of Materials) defines what goes into one finished product - the ingredients, their quantities, and expected wastage. Once a recipe exists, running a production batch consumes those inputs and produces the output automatically, with no manual stock math.

Before you start

Create the products first (Inventory → Product Catalog): the finished good you're making, and the raw materials and packaging it's made from. See Product types explained.

Step 1 - Create the recipe

  1. Open Inventory → Recipes.
  2. Click to create a new recipe (Create New Recipe).
  3. Give it a Recipe Name and pick the Finished Good it produces.

Step 2 - Add ingredients

Under Ingredients, add each input line:

  • Material - the raw material or packaging consumed.
  • Quantity - how much is needed per batch.
  • Std. Wastage - the expected loss for that ingredient, so your plan reflects reality.

Step 3 - Notes and save

Add any process Notes, then save. The recipe is now available when you start a production batch.

Tips

  • Model packaging as Packaging products so material and packaging costs stay separable in cost analysis.
  • Keep standard wastage honest - it feeds both planning and cost.

FAQ

Can one finished good have more than one recipe?

Keep a recipe per way you actually make the product. Choose the right recipe when you start the batch.

What happens to the ingredients when I produce?

They're consumed from stock automatically (by FIFO/FEFO) when the batch runs. See Running a production batch.
