How a batch moves through electronics

Electronics inventory questions
How do I trace a field failure back to a component lot?
The serial or batch of the assembly has to resolve to the specific component lots consumed in that build. If the BOM only records part numbers, a failing capacitor means every unit using that part number is suspect. If it records the reel, the exposure narrows to the builds that used it, which is usually a small fraction.
What does RoHS compliance require from inventory records?
It requires you to know which component lots went into which assemblies, because the declaration follows the parts actually used. A supplier changing formulation mid-part-number is the case that catches people out. Lot-level records let you draw the line at the date code; part-number records do not.
How should electronics manufacturers handle component date codes?
Treat the date code as part of the lot identity and let allocation respect age, the same way FEFO respects expiry. Moisture-sensitive parts and electrolytics have real shelf limits, and a stock system that treats all reels of a part number as interchangeable will quietly issue the oldest one last.
Can I manage a multi-level BOM with sub-assemblies?
Yes. A sub-assembly is a production batch that becomes an input to another batch, so the genealogy chains through the levels. What matters is that each level consumes specific lots rather than generic stock, otherwise traceability stops at whichever level was recorded loosely.
